Walking into an Illinois dispensary for the first time can feel like walking into a craft brewery, a coffee roaster, and a pharmacy all at once. The menu is long, the vocabulary is new, and the clerk behind the counter — the “budtender” — is asking questions most of us have never had to answer before. This guide is a plain-English walk-through of every product category you will see on a legal Illinois dispensary menu — what each one is, how it is typically used, and what kinds of questions to ask your budtender so your first purchase feels less like a quiz and more like a conversation. This is a neighborhood primer, not medical advice.
Flower: The Classic Cannabis Product
“Flower” is the dried, cured cannabis bud — the part of the plant most people picture when they hear the word “cannabis.” At any Illinois dispensary it is sold by weight: most dispensaries stock grams, eighths (3.5 g), quarters (7 g), and half-ounces (14 g). The label tells you the cultivar (the strain name), the percentages of major cannabinoids, and the harvest and packaging dates.
Flower is the most versatile format because it can be smoked in a pipe, rolled into a joint, loaded into a bong, or packed into a dry-herb vaporizer. It is also, for most people, the most affordable entry point.
Ask your budtender: “What is a good starter strain for someone new? Something on the lower end for cannabinoids, please.”
Pre-Rolls: Flower, Ready to Go
A pre-roll is exactly what it sounds like — flower that has already been ground and rolled into a cone, so you can light up without needing a grinder or papers. Single pre-rolls at standard sizes are common, and you will also see two-packs, five-packs, and infused pre-rolls that include concentrate for extra potency.
For a first-time Illinois dispensary shopper, pre-rolls are the friendliest on-ramp in the store. Minimal gear. Minimal learning curve. Share with a friend who is also of age.
Vapes: Cartridges, Disposables, and Live Resin
Vape cartridges (“carts”) are small glass tanks pre-filled with cannabis oil that screw onto a battery. Disposable vapes are all-in-one devices — battery and oil together — that you use until empty and then recycle. Live-resin and live-rosin vapes use flower-preserved extracts and tend to taste closer to the original cultivar.
Vapes are discreet and convenient, which is why they are one of the fastest-growing categories at every Illinois dispensary. Look for a state-issued test result on the label so you know what is inside.
Edibles: Gummies, Chocolates, and Beverages
Edibles are cannabis-infused foods and drinks. Illinois regulations cap a single retail package of adult-use edibles at 100 mg of THC, sold as individually dosed pieces (for example, a 10-pack of 10 mg gummies). Beverages are also sold in single servings.
Two things every first-time edible customer should know, even before they get to Pekin: edibles take longer to kick in than flower or vapes, and the onset time varies a lot from person to person. Budtenders at any Illinois dispensary will walk you through “start low and go slow” before you buy.
Ask your budtender: “What is the lowest dose you carry, and about how long should I wait before I consider having more?”
Concentrates: Rosin, Resin, Shatter, and Badder
Concentrates are exactly what the name says — concentrated forms of the cannabis plant, usually in a wax, shatter, badder, or sauce consistency. They are consumed by “dabbing” with a specialized rig, adding to a bowl of flower, or using a concentrate vape.
Concentrates are significantly stronger than flower by weight. They are not a first-visit product for most newcomers, and a good Pekin budtender will steer a first-time shopper toward flower or a low-dose edible before they point at the concentrate case.
Topicals and Transdermals
Topicals are cannabis-infused lotions, balms, and salves applied directly to the skin. Transdermals are patches that release cannabinoids through the skin over time. Neither is smoked or ingested.

Tinctures and Capsules
Tinctures are alcohol- or oil-based cannabis extracts that come in a small bottle with a dropper. Capsules are pre-measured cannabis doses in a swallow-sized pill. Both give a very consistent dose compared with flower, which is why they are popular with shoppers who do not want to smoke or vape.
Accessories: Grinders, Papers, Pipes, Batteries
Every Illinois dispensary carries a small accessories wall — grinders, rolling papers, pipes, bongs, vape batteries, and carrying cases. - “What is the lowest-cannabinoid option you have in this category?”
- “How long does this take to kick in, and how long does it usually last?”
- “What should I do if I buy too much or do not finish it in one visit?”
