The honest answer is “sometimes, but not the way you are used to.” Cannabis is still federally illegal, which means most major banks and card networks do not touch dispensary transactions the way they handle a grocery-store swipe. That creates a few quirks at the register that are worth understanding before you walk through our doors at Pekin’s Local Dispensary & Supply on 359 Court Street.

The Cash Reality at an Illinois Cannabis Dispensary
Cash is still the most reliable dispensary payment method at an Illinois cannabis dispensary. No processor hiccups. No “card declined” at the counter. No surprise $3 convenience fee. The state accepts cash for the excise tax, the dispensary accepts cash for the product, and the transaction takes about ten seconds.
If you are planning a first visit to Pekin’s Local, bring a little more cash than you think you need. Illinois taxes adult-use cannabis in three layers — the 6.25% state sales tax, a local retailer occupation tax that varies by municipality, and a potency-based cannabis excise tax that ranges from 10% to 25% depending on the product. A $40 eighth can shake out closer to $50 on the receipt, and cash keeps that math predictable.
Debit Cards: “Cashback” Style Transactions
Most Illinois dispensaries will accept a debit card but they do not run it like a standard retail swipe. Instead, a debit dispensary payment is usually processed as a PIN-based ATM withdrawal rounded up to the nearest $5 or $10, with the change returned to you in cash along with your purchase. Your receipt will often show the transaction as a cash withdrawal, not a purchase at the dispensary.
It is legal. It is safe. It is just unusual the first time you see it. If you pay with debit and the amount on your bank statement is rounded higher than your actual bill, the difference is the cash you walked out with.
Credit Cards: Almost Never at the Dispensary
Short version: most major credit card networks (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) do not process a dispensary payment for cannabis. If a dispensary appears to accept a credit card, it is usually being run as a workaround that could be shut down at any time, and many dispensaries will not take that risk. Cashless ATMs and Dispensary Payment Apps
A few dispensary payment apps and “cashless ATM” terminals do operate in Illinois. Names you may see on a dispensary counter include CanPay, Aeropay, and POSaBit, among others. Each one links to a bank account and processes the purchase as an ACH transfer rather than a card swipe. Fees vary.
These dispensary payment apps are convenient once you have set them up, but they are not instant. You usually have to download the app, verify your identity, and link a bank account a day or two before your visit. They work best for return customers, not walk-ins. What About the On-Site ATM?
Every Illinois dispensary we know of has at least one ATM on the floor. Plan for it. This dispensary payment option typically charges a $3 to $5 surcharge on top of whatever fee your bank charges for out-of-network withdrawals. That is a small convenience cost, and it beats walking out without the product you came for.

Receipts, Taxes, and Illinois Limits
Illinois caps how much cannabis a single adult resident can purchase in a single day: 30 grams of flower, 500 mg of THC in edibles, and five grams of concentrate. Non-residents are capped at half of that. Your receipt at Pekin’s Local will list exactly what you bought, what it weighed, and the taxes paid — keep it for your records, especially if you are visiting from out of state.
