First Time at a Dispensary in Illinois? Your Visit Doesn’t Have to Be Intimidating
Walking into a cannabis dispensary for the first time can feel a little nerve-wracking — especially if you’re not sure what to expect. But here’s the truth: dispensaries in Illinois are designed to be welcoming, professional, and easy to navigate. At Pekin’s Local Dispensary & Supply, we want every guest to feel comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.
This step-by-step guide walks you through what a first-time dispensary visit looks like in Illinois — from check-in to checkout — so you know exactly what to expect before you arrive.
Step 1: Check-In
Every licensed dispensary in Illinois is required to verify your identity before you can enter the sales floor. When you arrive at Pekin’s Local Dispensary, you’ll be greeted at the front desk where a team member will check your valid government-issued photo ID.
You must be 21 or older to purchase recreational cannabis in Illinois. Medical patients with a valid Illinois medical cannabis card can enter at age 18. Acceptable IDs include a driver’s license, state ID, or passport. The check-in process takes less than a minute, and your information is only used for age verification — nothing is stored or shared.
Once verified, you’ll be welcomed into the sales floor area.
Step 2: The Sales Floor
Illinois dispensaries are set up differently than a typical retail store. You won’t find products sitting on open shelves. Instead, cannabis products are displayed in locked cases or listed on digital menus. At Pekin’s Local, we keep our full menu visible so you can browse at your own pace.
Products are organized by category — flower, pre-rolls, edibles, vapes, concentrates, and topicals. Each product is labeled with its THC and CBD content, strain type (indica, sativa, or hybrid), and weight or quantity. If you’re not sure what any of that means, don’t worry — that’s what your budtender is for.
You can also shop by flavor profile if you know what tastes you enjoy. Whether you prefer citrus, earthy, sweet, or fruity, there’s a product that fits your preference.
Step 3: Ask Questions
This is the most important step for first-time visitors: talk to your budtender. Budtenders are trained cannabis professionals who can help you find the right product based on what you’re looking for — whether that’s relaxation, energy, pain relief, better sleep, or just something fun for a weekend.
Don’t be afraid to say, “This is my first time.” Our budtenders hear it every day, and they’re happy to walk you through everything. Some good questions to ask include:
- What’s a good product for someone who’s never tried cannabis?
- What’s the difference between indica, sativa, and hybrid?
- How much should I start with for edibles?
- What are terpenes and how do they affect the experience?
A good budtender won’t rush you. Take your time, ask whatever you need, and make a decision you feel good about.
Step 4: Checkout
Once you’ve selected your products, you’ll head to the checkout counter. In Illinois, recreational customers can purchase up to 30 grams of flower, 5 grams of concentrate, and 500 milligrams of THC in edibles per transaction. Medical patients have higher limits.
Most Illinois dispensaries — including Pekin’s Local — accept cash and debit cards. Credit cards are generally not accepted at cannabis dispensaries due to federal banking restrictions. There is typically an ATM on-site if you need cash.
Your purchase will be placed in a sealed, child-resistant exit bag before you leave the store. Illinois law requires that cannabis products remain in their original packaging until you’re in a private residence. You cannot open or consume cannabis products in the parking lot, in your car, or in any public space.
Tips for First-Timers
Start low and go slow. If you’re trying cannabis for the first time, begin with a low-THC product or a small dose — especially with edibles. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take full effect, so don’t take more if you don’t feel anything right away.
Bring your ID. No exceptions. You will not be allowed past the check-in area without a valid government-issued photo ID proving you’re 21 or older (or 18+ with a medical card).
Set a budget. Cannabis products range from $10 pre-rolls to $60+ eighths of premium flower. Check our discounts and rewards page for ways to save — including first-time visitor specials and our Pekin’s Pennies loyalty program.
Don’t drive under the influence. Cannabis impairs driving ability. Illinois has strict DUI laws that apply to cannabis, and law enforcement can test for impairment during traffic stops. Plan a safe ride home.
You can’t consume on-site. Illinois law prohibits consuming cannabis at or near a dispensary. Wait until you’re in a private residence before using any products you’ve purchased.
